Training

The longest day

A busy week was finished off with a fun day of patrolling and training at Exmouth.

There was a good turnout for the day with 6 guards and 4 junior surf life savers assisting.

It was reasonably quiet all day with junior training taken by Tom with help from Kim; Snowy took Jake for ski training ready for Devons and we had a nice phys session on the beach with Tom.

Around 16.00 we were tasked by Solent coastguard and Dawlish surf lifesaving club  to recover a rib drifting off Dawlish.  We towed it back to Dawlish beach, reuniting it with very grateful owners.

On our return we were asked to assist the RNLI guards with the recovery of a kite surfer drifting out by the channel entrance.

Tri and Tri again!

Following hot on the heels of last weekend's mega triathlon event at Hyde Park, volunteers from the club attended a slightly smaller event at the weekend at short notice to help out Swim Safety.

The South Hams Triathlon, a brand new sprint distance triathlon at Blackpool Sands, saw 150 people enter. Starting with a sheltered swim across the stunning bay at Blackpool Sands, then onto the bike for a tough climb followed by a fast blast along Slapton Sands, Devon's flattest stretch of road.

It was a crazily early start for Keith, Avalon, Jim and Dan who were on the water at 6am to help set the course.  We're happy to report the event went swimmingly with no one requiring removal from the water.

The weekend was a relatively quiet one back at Exmouth with a few minor first aids and another excellent turnout for the junior training session on Sunday.  With competition season closing in fast the team is training hard to prepare for the Nationals on home turf again this August.

A wave and photographer

Tuesday night's training session was a kracker, with small windswell blown up my Mondays storm it made for a fun training session on race and rescue boards for seniors before taking our junior section body surfing and putting them through their paces with the infamous Groyne Swim, a run swim run event that is a club tradition!

We were also lucky enough to be sent some great photos from a local, Arwyn Rees who luckily had his camera ready to capture the fun!

New junior members welcomed

Sunday the 26th April saw 8 new junior members successfully take part in their induction. The morning is designed to assess the juniors swim competence with a 200m pool swim in under 5 minutes as well as beach runs, open water swimming and group work.  It is also a great opportunity for existing club members to get to meet parents.

The new members will begin their journey to becoming lifeguards of the future on the 5th May following the club's AGM and the bank holiday.  They will take part in surf life saving sport training, a key part of acquiring the fitness and skills required to be a lifeguard. As well as theory around the beach environment and aquatic first aid.

Well done and thank you to all volunteers involved and a warm welcome to the club to our new members.

Summer is here!

British Summer Time is here! That means it's light enough to begin training outdoors again on a Tuesday evening.  For the next few weeks we'll be starting at 6.30 to make the most of the day light.  last night was a great session with a downwind paddle capped off by a little wave

Tuesday is a fitness session for all club members.  Training sessions are designed to make the most of the conditions.  If it's flat we usually work on board, ski and swim, if there's surf we hone our board riding and racing skills.

We're also going to offer a casual Thursday night training session for seniors only.  This will be organised on a week by week basis depending on who is available to open up.
